So said an attorney to us recently. He was unaware that
Day-In-The-Life (or Settlement Video Documentaries) were not only
available in Milwaukee, but were an obvious extension of Owen May's
professional background as a television news journalist (WTMJ-TV,
Milwaukee).
So what assures an effective Day-In-The-Life documentary? Several
critical factors that May sums up this way:
"An effective Day-In-The-Life video is like a perfectly-mastered
puzzle", he says. "But in addition to knowing which pieces of the
puzzle go where (the editing process), the legal videographer's task
is to actually CREATE the puzzle pieces (the video scenes) in a way
that assures a logical sequence and a cohesive Day-In-The Life
'story' - the story of your client."
These productions bring careful focus to the facts in a case. And
if done well, the presentation has the same look and feel of what a
viewer might experience on a network news program like 20/20 or
Dateline NBC.
As for production fees, Settlement/Day-In-the-Life documentaries are
priced on the basis of the time involved in both acquisition of the
video footage (shooting), and the editing of that footage. Our
simplest effort - shooting without editing -- can be arranged for
under $1000. But typical fully-edited productions seem to fall in a
price range of $1200 - $2400. More elaborate presentations (with
scripting, professional narration, graphics, etc.) command higher
fees.
